I usually never get mail, unless you count bills and credit card offers. Yes, I get cards on my birthday or for some holidays, but never letters or a note just to say “I’m thinking of you.” I guess snail-mail seems outdated in the Internet age. Today, I got a letter though! I felt like singing that Blues Clues mail song.
I got a letter from the volunteers of Peace Corps Senegal thanking me for making a donation to a girls camp that was recently held there. What made it even more special was a beautiful hand-written note from one of the girls who attended the camp expressing her thanks for all the things she learned and the fun that was had. I made a small donation this past Christmas and had completely forgotten, but my $10 clearly was not forgotten by the forty middle school girls who attended and learned about identity, health, the environment, gender and careers. It just goes to show how small gestures, with kindness and generosity in mind, can go a long way.
This letter made an ordinary Wednesday extraordinary. It is for reasons like this that I am so happy to be joining an organization like the Peace Corps.
To view photos of the camp go to ccc.pcsenegal.org. Or to make a donation to other Peace Corps projects go to peacecorps.gov/donate.
